Abstract
1458424 Forging presses ASEA AB 2 May 1974 [3 May 1973] 19230/74 Heading B3H A forging press comprises a pressure chamber 3 in which a billet 5 is positioned for forging between a bottom tool 16 and a top tool in the form of a piston 7 which enters the chamber to pressurize the fluid therein and then contacts the billet to forge it. The billet is supported externally by the pressurized fluid to prevent cracking. The piston 7 has a pressure-equalizing chamber 8 connected by passages 10, 11 to the main chamber 3. The main chamber is defined by a tubular member 12 on a slidable sleeve 13 which is raised and lowered by oil pressure in annular chambers 14, 15. In operation the sleeve is lowered to position the tubular member 12 around the billet 5, Fig. 2. The piston 7 is lowered by pressurizing the annular chamber 6 causing pressurizing of the pressure chamber 3. The pressure chamber 3 and the pressureequalizing chamber 8 decrease and increase in volume respectively during the piston lowering but because of the difference in area of the piston 9 and a piston 9 in the pressure-equalizing chamber, the pressure in the pressure chamber rises.
