Steam pumps; actuating pumps.-Consists in a compound steam engine for working a feed, mine, or well pump, the cylinders being arranged coaxially and the piston-rod actuating the valve of an auxiliary cylinder, the piston of which moves the main valves of both high and low pressure cylinders. An expansion valve, worked by the main piston, is placed on the main valve. The engine may be connected directly to the pump and the piston moved in both directions by the actuating-fluid, or it may be worked on the Cornish cycle. As the main piston of the engine is pulled forwards by the weight of the pump plunger, the actuating-fluid passes from the front to the rear of the piston through a passage. The connecting- rod of a horizontal engine and the plunger of a vertical pump are connected to a bell-crank lever, so that, during the working stroke, the leverage of the steam pressure in the cylinder increases, and the leverage of the weight of the ram decreases.
