13,796. Sutcliffe, E. R., and Pure Coal Briquettes, Ltd. Sept. 28. Tandem-cylinder engines for pumps supplying hydraulic presses suitable for the manufacture of briquettes under high pressure from coal or other carbonaceous substances without a binder, and applicable also tor metal pressing or forging. Two steam cylinders a, b of different diameters are provided with connected pistons c', c<2>. Steam is admitted at the rear only of the cylinder a, and at both ends of the cylinder b. Admission and exhaust of steam to and from the cylinder a is effected by similar valves i, i<1> one behind the other in a casing i<2>, operated by rods j<5> and cams j<6>. Any suitable means may be employed for actuating the rods j<5>, such as eccentrics driven by an electric motor. The steam inlet pipe p is connected by a branch b<6> to the rear of the piston c<2> which is thus always under pressure. The admission and exhaust of steam to and from the front of the piston c<2> is effected by valves o, o<1> similar to those employed for the cylinder a, and similarly actuated by a rod j<4> . The piston rod c is connected to or formed integral with the hydraulic plunger e which forces water to the press by the pipe 30 for the pressing operation. The cycle of operation is such that for the first part of the stroke steam is admitted behind the piston c<1>, and on both sides of the piston c<2> which is thus balanced. The admission of steam to the cylinder a is cut off at a suitable point, say at about 1/3 of the stroke by a suitable setting of the valve, and pressure is thus applied under its expansion. Towards the end of the forward stroke the inlet valve o is closed and the exhaust valve o<1> opened. The pressure on the front of the piston c<2> thus falls and the pressure on the rear becomes effective so that the final compression is effected under increased pressure. At the end of the forward stroke, the pressures on the piston c<2> are again balanced and the pistons return to their initial positions under hydraulic pressure as described in Specification 102,918, [Class 69 (ii), Hydraulic presses &c.], which relates to the briquetting apparatus. The exhaust valves i<1>, o<1> may be closed shortly before the ends of the corresponding strokes to cushion the pistons. The cylinders a, bare mounted over a recess in the brickwork setting t so that the valves and gear are accessible.
