Abstract
127,993. Vernon, S. S. June 12, 1918. Starting and stopping pumps automatically.-In air-compressors described as part of a selfdriving compressed-air power plant, in which the exhaust valves 77 of the main compressed-air engine cylinders 2 are connected by pipes 90 to a second set of cylinders 95 with pistons, which drive a crank shaft 109 and a parallel shaft 50 geared thereto through a transverse shaft 112, to drive the air-compressors 35 in order to replenish the reservoir from the atmosphere, and in which the pistons of the compressors are connected to eccentrics on the shaft 50, the eccentrics are loose on the shaft and are driven through clutches, which are connected to a piston 55, Fig. 6, in a cylinder 54 joined up to the reservoir by a pipe 60. When the pressure in the reservoir is excessive, the piston 55 is thrust forward against a spring 65 to open the clutches and throw the air-compressors out of action. In the outward stroke, a finger 66 on the piston-rod ducks under an overlying lever 69, but as the piston recoils after passing a snifting-valve 64, the finger makes the lever open an exhaust port 74. The exhaust pipe 90 of each main cylinder 2 has an open branch 92 and a distributing-valve 99, Fig. 11. These valves, being coupled by a rod 102, Fig. 6, to a lever 104 worked by the rod of piston 55, are operated to let the exhaust escape when the compressors are unclutched.
