Abstract

17,659. Jamieson, M. W. Sept. 3. Gas engines.-The engine may be single-acting, as shown in Fig. 1, or double-acting, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10. The single - acting engine comprises two pistons B, C, the former making two strokes to the latter's one. It works on a four-stioke cycle, and is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1 as having completed its compression stroke. During the suction stroke the pistons move in opposite directions outwards, during the compression stroke the piston B moves inwards, while C continues to move outwards, during the explosion stroke they both move in the opposite direction ; B outward and C inward, and during the exhaust stroke they are brought close together again. The double-acting engine has pistons B, B' on each side of the piston C, Fig. 10. The piston C is operated through a rocking-shaft 17 by a piu- and-slot mechanism 10, 1, Fig. 9, driven at half the speed of the crank shaft 6. The exhaust valves E are worked by a cam 27 on the wheel 8 through levers 25, 26. The crank shaft may be in line with the cylinder axis, the more remote piston being worked by a return connecting-rod. The admission pipe is packed with metallic filaments, such as fine iron or brass turnings, to prevent back firing.
