Abstract

1327507 Electroslag remelting processes and apparatus INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI E O PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 2 Nov 1971 50930/71 Heading B3F An electroslag remelting apparatus includes a base plate 1 a mould 2 and a core 6. The mould 2 and core 6 are cooled. Slots are provided in the mould wall accommodating cooled members 4 that are slidable vertically within the slots. The members 4 hold coded pipes 5 which are attached both to the core 6 and to a lifting drive 7. Hollow ingots of tapering cross-section are provided by fusing an electrode 9 through a molten slag bath 10 and progressively raising the core 6 with the slider members 4. When using upwardly tapered moulds (as in Fig. 2), a spout 14 may be provided on a slider member 4 to keep the slag depth constant. When casting in downwardly tapered moulds, extra slag is added during melting to ensure constant slag depth.
