Abstract

1327303 Zinc electroplating bath M & T CRUICKSHANKS Ltd 16 March 1972 [23 March 1971] 7609/71 Heading C7B A Zn electroplating bath comprises an aqueous acidic solution of (a) at least one Zn salt, (b) a surface active agent in the form of a salt of an alkyl substituted diphenyloxide sulphonic acid, wherein the alkyl substituent is a hydrocarbon chain having between 5 and 20 carbon atoms, and (c) an aromatic carbonyl or aromatic carboxyl compound. The Zn salt (a) may be the sulphate, chloride, acetate or fluoborate. Suitable cations for the sulphonic acid salt (b) are Na, K, NH 4 , Zn and Mg. The aromatic compound (c) may be benzal acetone, benzoic acid, benzaldehyde, cinnamic aldehyde, salicylic acid, vanillin, anisaldehyde, piperonal, p-methyl acetophenone benzophenone, benzoyl acetic acid ethyl ester or acetophenone. To aid dispersion in the bath of the compounds (c), solvents such as the following may be employed;- ethyl alcohol, dioxan, methyl cellosolve, ethyl cellosolve and triethylene glycol monoethyl ether. "Cellosolve" is a Trade Mark. The bath may also include an ammonium salt (e.g. sulphate or chloride) and/or a further compound capable of forming soluble complexes with Zn salts (e.g. citric acid, malic acid, sodium glycerophosphate, triethanolamine, ethylenediamine and/or ethylendiamine tetraacetic acid). Possible further additives are liquorice extract, dextrin, starch, saponin, polyvinyl alcohol, carboxy methyl cellulose, hydroxy ethyl cellulose, gum acacia, gum tragacanth, carragheen moss; some surface active agents such as N-octyl sulphate or ethyl hexyl sulphate; and metals such as Mo or W added as sodium molybdate or sodium tungstate. A Zn anode may be used during electroplating. Zn coatings obtained by the electroplating may be phosphated or chromated.
