Abstract

1,133,882. Ketones. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Sept., 1967 [8 Sept., 1966], No. 40206/66. Heading C2C. A ketone is produced from a cycloaliphatic or aliphatic aldehyde, in which the -CHO group is attached to a secondary C atom, with oxygen in the presence of a solution of a base and a copper salt. The aldehyde is preferably an alkanol of up to 20 C atoms or a cycloaliphatic aldehyde of up to 10 C atoms. The base may be an N-containing aliphatic or heterocyclio compound and suitable copper salts include the chloride, sulphate, nitrate, acetate, propionate and hexoate. A hydroxylic solvent is also advantageously present. In the example acetone is prepared by treating isobutyraldehyde with oxygen in the presence of pyridine, water and cupric chloride.
