Methylolalkanoic acids of the formula in which R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, hydrogen or the methylol group and R<SP>2</SP> is hydrogen or the methylol group, are prepared by oxidation of a methylolalkyl methyl ketone of the formula The preferred oxidizing agent is alkaline sodium hypochlorite, the reaction preferably being carried out below 15‹ C. in a water-soluble solvent. Examples describe the preparation of dimethylolbutyric acid and dimethylolpropionic acid.
