Nootkatone, of the formula is prepared by hydrohalogenating nootkatene of the formula with a gaseous hydrogen halide and oxidizing the product. The preferred oxidizing agent is a mixture of chromic acid and aqueous sulphuric acid, but others are specified also. Examples are given.
