Abstract

1,176,862. Electro-depositing zinc. PERNIX ENTHONE. Feb.6, 1967 [Feb.7, 1966 ], No.5617/67. Heading C7B. Zinc is electro-deposited, e.g. on steel or copper strip or sheet, or electro-ion from an acid zinc plating bath, e.g. an aqueous solution containing 40-60 oz/ga1 ZnSO 4 . H 2 0, 2-4 oz/gal H 3 B0 3 and optionally 2-4 oz/gal NH 4 F or NH 4 C1 and having a pH of 2 or 3, to which has been added a composition comprising a bath-compatible protein hydrolysate, e.g. of animal, yeast or vegetable origin, particularly an enzymatically degraded meat protein, and a soluble compound of a Group V1B metal (Cr, Mo or W), preferably a trivalent Cr salt such as chromic or chromium-ammonium sulphate; Mo may be provided in the bath by ammonium heptamolybdate, Mo tetrachloride or MoO 3 , or W by phosphotungstic acid. The bath may also contain, as booster brightener and ductilizer, a bata-compatible S-containing compound capable of providing sulph-hydryl groups in the bath, e.g. an organic compound of the formula HSCH 2 COOR where R is H (i.e. thioglycollic acid), Na, K or NH 4 , or an inorganic compound such as Na 2 S 4 . The protein hydrolysate is preferably pretreated by acidifying an aqueous solution of the protein to pH 2-3À5 to form a flocculent precipitate which is separated e.g. by filtration. The additive composition may also contain a mould- and bacteriagrowth inhibitor such as a Na salt of 2, 4, 5-trichlorophenol and a perfuming agent.
