Abstract
1326407 Propelling ships Z MARINCEK 29 Sept 1970 [1 Oct 1969] 46280/70 Heading B7V A ship's propulsion unit comprises a propeller pump 2 having an intake duct 1 and an output duct 3 both of which are tapered inwardly towards the pump 2, the measured or calculated angle formed between opposed inwardly tapering walls of the duct not exceeding sixteen degrees. The unit may be mounted within a fairing 5 in the bottom of the ship, generally in a vertical plane (Fig. 3). A protective net 12 is provided at the mouth of the intake duct 1 and guide vanes 33 and the end of the output duct 3. The propeller shaft 21 is pivotable through an angle # as shown. The mouth of the intake duct 1 may be flush with the ship's bottom (Fig. 4, not shown). The unit may be placed at the bow (Fig. 5, not shown) or at the stern, Fig. 6 (not shown). Pairs of units may be positioned symmetrically with respect to the central, vertical, longitudinal plane of the ship at the bow or along the sides of the ship (Figs. 2, 7, 8, 9, not shown). The unit may be placed centrally at the bottom of the bow with a single intake duct and two output ducts leading to the sides of the ship (Fig. 10, not shown) or at the stern with two intake ducts leading from the sides and a central output duct (Fig. 11, not shown). Units may be placed amidships both below and at the sides (Fig. 12, not shown). The unit may have the intake duct, pump and output duct in a straight line and be mounted externally on the hull (Fig. 13, not shown).
