Abstract

1319105 Metal vapour lamps PATENTTREUHAND - GES FUR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN mbH 3 July 1970 [25 July 1969] 32451/70 Heading H1D A low pressure Hg vapour discharge lamp, e.g. a fluorescent lamp, with a power input of less than 0À7 W/cm., contains an indiumamalgam as a main amalgam determining the equilibrium operating vapour pressure with an In-Hg wt. ration of 12 : 1 to 3 : 1, (e.g. 6 : 1), the main amalgam or the respective amalgamforming metal 12 being located at positions adjacent the lamp ends within the lamp which have an operating temperature of from 80‹ to 110‹ C., (e.g. 95‹ C.), the lamp containing one or more additional amalgams or amalgam forming metals accelerating the run-up of the lamp in places which are much hotter during run-up of the lamp than the position of the main amalgam, the additional amalgams attaining their operation temperature earlier than the main amalgam. The additional amalgam is preferably an indium alloy, applied on the electrode cap. A place of low heat capacity closer to the electrode than that of the main amalgam such as a stem pinch with a spray deposited spot of indium is suitable for a second run up amalgam, this amalgam delivering Hg after the amalgam on the electrode cap, but before the main amalgam. The In may be sprayed in liquid state on to an electrode stem flare as an annular film, Fig. 1 shows exhaust tube 8, electrode coil 9 pasted with oxide, surrounded by annular metal cap 10 of sheet iron, with amalgam forming metal strip 11, preferably In-Sn-Pb in wt. ratio 2 : 6 : 2, in amount 5 to 10 mgrms., stem flare 4 with 60 grms. of indium metal 12 as main amalgam forming metal, and 5 to 10 mgrms. spray deposited In spot 13. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates luminous flux against ambient temperature for open batten type fittings, downwards opening reflector fittings, lowered fittings, trough-shaped and coffered fittings and moisture proof fittings. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates run up characteristics with two, one and no run up amalgams in curves 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,192,999.
