Abstract
1471454 Metal-vapour lamps PATENT TREUHAND GES FUR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN mbH 26 July 1974 [1 Aug 1973] 33036/74 Heading H1D In a low pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp, preferably a fluorescent lamp, an amalgam determining the equilibrium vapour pressure in operation of the lamp and containing more than one metal (apart from Hg) contains an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal (e.g. Mg). The amalgam may also include In, Pb, Cd, Su. The proportion of In may be 5-50 mol per cent, preferably 5-40 mol per cent, with 5-40 mol per cent Hg. A particular amalgam for lamps which are thermally highly loaded contains 1 mol Hg, 6 mol In and 1 mol Mg. For high power lamps, the amalgam may contain 1 mol Hg, 10 mol In and 1 mol Hg. Mg can be substituted for In reducing the amount of In by about 40%, which reduces cost and has other advantages. As shown in Fig. 1, a lamp with an envelope 1 carrying a fluorescent layer 2 has at each end a stem 3 carrying the electrodes and having a flare 4. The amalgam is applied to flare 4 in the form of a ring 10. The width of ring 10 may be 3 mm., and quantity of Mg, 1À2 mg and of In, 34 mg. 20 mg Of Hg is introduced into the lamp. The amalgam formed contains 1 mol Hg to 7 mol of Mg-In alloy. A metal cylinder 11 surrounding the electrode carries an amalgam-forming alloy 13 including In to facilitate run-up. Alternatively, the amalgam (15) of composition Hg 1 In 10 Mg 1 , is carried by an iron foil (14) (Fig. 2, not shown) disposed around the stem and supported thereby by means of a wire. The lamps have a light flux which varies little with changes in the internal temperature.
