Abstract

1310552 Tuyeres; blast furnace cooling boxes WENDEL-SIDELOR 6 May 1970 [14 May 1969] 21797/70 Heading F4B A water cooled tuyere is provided with a removable insert 9 which defines with the inner wall 2 a first helical inlet duct 11, and with the outer wall 1 a second helical outlet duct 10, the ducts 11, 10 being interconnected at the tuyere tip 3 by a spiral passageway. Similarly a blast furnace cooling box (18, Fig. 6, not shown) may be fitted with a removable insert providing an outer helical inlet duct (22) connected to an axial return duct by a spiral passageway (25) at the tip of the cooling box. The cross-sections of the helical ducts diminish as they approach the tip of the tuyere or cooling box, a formula limiting their size and shape to ensure non- laminar water flow being given. The insert may be made of rubber or plastics, or of a metal electronegative to the metal of the tuyere or cooling box to protect the latter from corrosion. The cooling water may flow in series through several such tuyeres or boxes.
