The effective cross-sectional area of a blast furnace tuyere is limited by blowing air transversely of the main blast flow through one or more slots 5 formed in a plenum chamber 4 near the mouth of the tuyere and supplied by valve-controlled pipes 2, 8 branching off a main 7, which may be the furnace bustle pipe. The tuyere nose 6 is cylindrical or slightly divergent and the water jacket 1 is supplied by branch pipes 10, 11 extending from a main 9 to said tuyere. Fig. 7 shows the arrangement of the respective ends 25 and 22 of the air and cooling water pipes at the nose of the tuyere, the wall of the plenum chamber being recessed at 23 to accommodate the ends 22 of the water pipes. In a modification, Fig. 3, the slot 5 is formed on the inner periphery of a separate plenum chamber 14 which is retractably mounted on the forked supply pipe 12. Another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), has a retractable supply pipe formed at the end with an axial nozzle through which the auxiliary air is dispersed transversely of the main blast flows. A further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), has a diametrically disposed plenum chamber supplied at the ends by branch pipes. The slot or slots 5 can also be disposed behind the nose ot the tuyere, Fig. 8 (not snown).
