A tuyere in a shaft furnace has a fluid fuel pipe leading into it, at an angle to the axis, which is slidable within another pipe. As shown, an annular frustoconical water-cooled tuyere 1 has an inlet pipe 10 running through the back wall 3 into the inner wall 4 surrounding a sliding pipe 11 which has a high pressure (5-30 atms. (gauge)) nozzle 12. Water is passed through the annular chamber 6.
