Abstract

918,160. Smelting processes. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. June 21, 1961 [June 27, 1960 ; Oct. 27, 1960], No. 22432/61. Class 72. A process of introducing a liquid hydrocarbon into a blast furnace through a pipe located in a tuyere comprises introducing the fuel into a shrouded injection pipe and atomizing the fuel by the differential velocity between the blast and the fuel. As shown, a tuyere is provided with a fuel pipe 5 having a shroud 6 and supported in the tuyere by a wedge-shaped centing device 7. A cooling fluid, e.g. air, may be passed through the annular space between the fuel pipe and the shroud, and the fuel pipe may terminate at a point between 2.8 and 1.4 times the tuyere nozzle diameter behind the tuyere outlet. The fuel may be residual petroleum and blast air velocity may be 300-800 cu. ft. per sec. with a fuel velocity of 5-50 cu. ft. per sec. It is stated that smoke formation and plugging of the fuel injection and tuyere opening is prevented or reduced.
