Abstract

1308525 Lamp ballast circuit XEROX CORP 30 April 1970 [1 May 1969] 20800/70 Heading H2H In a lamp ballast circuit of the type in which the series impedance with the lamp is capacitative, the impedance is varied by means of a variable inductor in series with the capacitance, the circuit being characterized in that the total impedance is always effectively capacitative. The voltage supply for a metal vapour gas discharge lamp 3 is provided by an auto transformer 1. The ballast circuit comprises a unit 2 whose impedance is always effectively capacitative. Unit 2 comprises a capacitor 11 in series with a saturable core reactor 16, which is shunted by an inductor 23 which ensures that unit 2 always has a net capacitative impedance. The saturable core reactor 16 may be controlled by means of a photo-cell 21 monitoring the light output of the lamp. Alternatively the lamp may be fed by a fixed output transformer, and the saturable core reactor may be replaced by an ordinary variable inductor.
