Abstract

1365922 Supply circuits for discharge lamps; intrinsically safe circuits VICTOR PRODUCTS (WALLSEND) Ltd 25 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971 18 Nov 1971] 3094/71 and 53633/71 Heading H2H A circuit for supplying power to a discharge lamp 17 comprises parallel branches 12, 13 containing capacitive and inductive reactances 14 and 18 respectively and a third branch 21 containing a reactance 22 which forms with the reactance 18 a circuit which is at least approximately tuned to the frequency of a supply 24. The supply has a high frequency and the lamp has a low thermal capacity heater 25 connected across a resistor 20. When the source 24 is switched on there is only a small damping of the series resonant circuit 18, 22 since resistors 19, 23 are small and since the resistor 20 is shunted by the heater 25. When the lamp strikes, its low impedance shunts a high resistance 16 and damps the tuned circuit causing the voltage to fall. A power factor correcting capacitor 14 limits the lamp current and a second heater 26 may be supplied by a transformer 28. The circuit is designed so that short circuits or breakage of the lamp heater cause de-tuning of the resonant circuit with a consequential reduction in the voltage. High energy sparks are therefore not produced so that the circuit is intrinsically safe and may be used in a hazardous atmosphere.
