Abstract
1,119,874. Discharge lamp circuits. BRITISH LIGHTING INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 June, 1967 [8 June, 1966], No. 25586/66. Heading H2H. A starting circuit for a discharge lamp 10 having a ballast choke 11 comprises a capacitor 15 charged each half cycle through an impedance 16 and discharged near the peak of each half wave by a bi-directional semi-conductor breakdown device 14 through part of a step-up autotransformer 17. In another arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown), a secondary winding (20) is used as the charging impedance and the capacitor is discharged through a coupled primary winding (19). In a further arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown), the starting pulse is produced by the charging current of the capacitor which is discharged by a leakage resistor (25). The device 14 may comprise Shockley diodes, thyristors with floating control electrodes, a Symistor, Triac or controlled A.C. switch. A capacitor may be connected in series with the choke 11 and the lamp may have heatable electrodes.
