Abstract

1381876 Lamp dimming circuits RCA CORPORATION 6 July 1972 [30 July 1971(2)] 36057/71 and 36058/71 Heading H2H [Also in Division H3] A switching circuit for controlling the supply of A.C. power to an incandescent lamp 680 comprises a triac 640, a time constant circuit for controlling the phase angle at which the triac is fired, a radio frequency interference suppression filter 610 and a circuit 630 for preventing commutation of the triac into a non-conductive state when it is conducting. When the voltage across a capacitor 670 reaches the breakdown voltage of a diac 614, the capacitor discharges into the gate electrode G to fire the triac. The oscillatory current generated by the switching transient in the resonant circuit formed by the triac and the filter may be of a polarity and sufficient amplitude to tend to switch off the triac. However this is prevented by the circuit 630 including a capacitor 631 and a resistor 632 via which the energy stored in an inductor 612 enables a potential to be applied between the electrodes G, T 1 of the triac. The capacitor 631 has a value such that it is incapable of triggering the triac from the supply 650 when the triac is off.
