Abstract
1,241,060. Control systems for discharge lamps. ORIGINAL HANAU QUARZLAMPEN G.m.b.H. 21 Oct., 1968 [21 Oct., 1967], No. 49933/68. Heading H2H. A discharge lamp of the kind used in the production of infra-red radiation is provided with means for starting the lamp which comprises the superimposition on the lamp operating voltage of a voltage having a number of low-frequency harmonics. A discharge lamp L is immersed in a medium F having a high dielectric constant-such as water-in order to produce infra-red radiation. The normal operating voltage for the lamp is provided by an A.C. supply connected to the primary winding of a transformer Trl, the lamp L being connected to the secondary winding. A further winding W1 is magnetically coupled to the secondary winding, the lamp being started by pulses which are produced in the winding W1 when a voltage breakdown device, such as a spark-gap FS, conducts. A capacitor C1 is charged from an A.C. supply by way of a transformer Tr2, voltage doubler SpVd and a resistor R1. When the capacitor voltage reaches a desired value the spark-gap FS breaks down and the capacitor C1 discharges through the winding W1 causing ignition of the lamp L. The high-frequency harmonics in the pulse may be filtered out by designing the inductance and the self capacity of the windings of the transformer Tr1 so that the transformer forms the necessary filter. In a further embodiment the transformer Tr1 may be replaced by a choke to which the winding W1 is inductively coupled.
