Abstract

1, 095,061. Ignition systems. ELTRA CORPORATION. Feb. 10, 1965 [Nov. 16, 1964], No. 5865/65. Heading F1B. In an ignition system, a triggering means for causing intermittent release of the energy from an energy storage device 46 comprises a solid state oscillator, the oscillator 20 having a control electrode and a pair of magnetically coupled inductive coils operably connected to the control electrode whereby changes in the mutual inductance between the coils causes variations in the output of the oscillator and means to cause the output variations to effect a periodic discharge of energy from the energy storage device to the spark discharge device or devices. The oscillator is an astable blocking oscillator comprising a PNP transistor 20. As shown the storage capacitor 46 is connected to the full wave rectifier of the power supply through a diode 47 and a coil 48. If desired a second storage capacitor 49 may be connected in parallel with the storage capacitor 46 when starting. When the SCR43 is triggered by the differential pulse from the triggering circuit the capacitor 46 discharges through the SCR43 and the primary 45 of the pulse transformer P. A modified triggering circuit is described. The coils L 1 , L 2 , L 3 may be wound on a ferrite A core which is preferably encased in a non-magnetic housing which is fixed within a conventional distributer in place of the conventional points. A plurality of ferrite bars or "I-cores" are equally spaced around the periphery of a non-magnetic ring secured to the distributer shaft. Rotation of the ring will pass each of the I-cores closely adjacent the legs of the A-core. An advantage of the system is the elimination of the conventional coil.
