Abstract
1305645 Laminated metal-wood beams S W LINDAL 16 April 1970 [24 April 1969] 18247/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division E1] A prestressed laminated beam comprises (i) a wooden beam 23, having a longitudinallyextending initially flat surface, which is bent in a plane parallel to the length of the beam and normal to said surface by forces WBF opposite to those anticipated upon installation, and (ii) a metal lamina 25 secured to said surface to hold the beam in its prestressed configuration. The metal lamina may be prestressed by tensile forces MTF. Securing may be by elements, as at 27, punched from but remaining integral with the metal sheet, by separate fastening elements, e.g. nails, screws, bolts, or by adhesive. The said initially flat surface may be the major or minor surface and the metal lamina may comprise two or more parallel metal strips if the surface is wide. A beam unit may be formed by a series of alternating wood and metal layers. The metal lamina may be shaped at its edge 41 to fit round the end faces of the wooden beam.
