Abstract

1,060,557. Bending chipboard. M. CARTLAND. Jan. 19, 1966 [March 29, 1965], No. 2512/66. Heading B5L. A method of bending a length of chipboard or like non-grained material 1 comprises securing to one side of the length of material along a portion of the length thereof to be bent a flexible backing sheet 2, such as a laminated wood veneer, forming in the portion of the material to be bent a plurality of spaced-apart grooves 6 arranged transversely to the desired direction of bending, the grooves opening to the side of the material opposite the backing sheet and penetrating the material to or near the backing sheet, bending the portion of the length of material with the backing sheet secured thereto to the desired curvature, and, while maintained in bent condition, securing to the side of the material, opposite to the backing sheet, supporting means 7 adapted to maintain the material in bent condition. In carrying out the method, the chipboard may be initially recessed on both sides over the portion to be bent and the backing sheet 2 of laminated wood veneer is adhesively secured in the recess which will form the outer surface of the bent portion and of the article being constructed. A decorative wood veneer 3 on a backing 4 of constructional wood veneer is then adhesively secured to the backing sheet 2 and the chipboard. The grooves 6 may be cut by a saw and the chipboard is then bent to the desired curvature in a jig. The supporting means in the form of a wood veneer 7 is adhesively secured to the inner recess of the chipboard which remains in the jig until the adhesive has set. Adhesive may also be applied to the top and bottom of the grooves. In an alternative method, the backing sheet is secured in the recess which will be on the inner surface and the supporting means is secured in the recess in the outer surface.
