Launching-ways; runners and sk´ds.-Apparatus for launching or receiving aeroplanes on vessels at sea or unfavourable places on land comprises a series of ropes forming a tight-rope track of greater width than the span of the aeroplane wings and adapted to receive runners underneath the aeroplanes. Fig. 2 shows a series of ropes 4 stretched between outriggers 1 hinged to the ship on vertical axes 2 so that they may be swung alongside the ship when not in use. The ropes are attached to the outriggers by means of swivel heads and tightening-screws. Guy-ropes 10 connect the outriggers to the ship, and one of the ropes may be led round a windlass for swinging the outriggers. The guy-ropes may be connected to hydraulic controlling and operating gears. Fig. 7 shows an aeroplane fitted with runners 14 at or near the leading and trailing edges of the lower wings. At the centre of the runners is provided a V-shaped brake block 16 movable vertically so as to clamp one of the ropes of the track within a V-shaped notch in the runner.
