Abstract

618,320. Docks for flying boats. SAUNDERSROE, Ltd., and BROADSMITH, H. E. Oct. 16, 1946, No. 30807. [Class 4] A pontoon dock for flying boats comprises an end portion 10 to which are attached arms 11 forming a bay to accommodate the hull, a mooring cable 17 for engaging an automatic pick-up hook on the aircraft being attached to the arms 11 and spanning the bay, below water level, and in advance of its mouth. The pick-up hook may be as described in Specification 575,919. The cable 17 passes from capstans 18 to pulleys 16 carried on outriggers 14, to which are attached wheel fenders 15. A hauling cable 21 extends from the middle of the mooring cable to a winch 22. Upon engaging the cable 17 the aircraft is retarded by the cable and inward movement of the arms 11 against hydraulic buffers 13. After the aircraft has been drawn into the dock by the winch 22 the arms 11 can be closed towards the hull by operating pumps fitted to the buffers 13. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the mooring cable passes over pulleys attached to buoys anchored considerably in advance of the mouth of the dock, while in a further modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the dock is provided with a power unit and propeller, enabling it to be moved to a stationary aircraft, if desired. Provision may also be made for picking up a tail hook.
