Abstract

544,246. Salving stranded ships. McCALLUM, W. F. Jan. 1, 1940, No. 47. [Class 68 (ii)] Means for hauling a stranded ship off a shoal or beach employs two unanchoied pontoons. B. C. and a third anchored pontoon all being provided with ball-bearing sheaves constituting differential tackle operated by two winches G, G<SP>1</SP> to draw the three pontoons towards one another and, consequently, to draw the ship off the shoal. The ship is connected with the first pontoon B by ropes E and to hold the pontoons in position if the hauling tackle breaks they are connected by a chain passing through grips on the pontoons. The method may be carried out using one only of the unanchored pontoons.
