Magneto-electric machines. - A magneto is provided with auxiliary pole-pieces AP which extend over only a portion of the length of the main pole-pieces MP and are separated therefrom by air-gaps G or gaps of non-magnetic material. The arc subtended by an auxiliary pole-piece is usually equal to the range of driving in the case of an engine of the uniform firing type, but in a V-type engine, this arc is usually equal to half the angle between the cylinders. The sides of the auxiliary pole-pieces may be straight or curved and need not be parallel either to each other or to the edges of the main pole-pieces. Similar magnetic extensions may be fitted to the armature.
