Abstract

1291746 Separating furnace zones BTU ENG CORP 28 Oct 1970 [3 Nov 1969] 51180/70 Heading F4B An adjustable gas barrier for separating the atmospheres of two adjacent sections of a muffle furnace comprises two circular plates 18, 20 each sealed to an adjacent section 12, 14 of the furnace and connected by a cylindrical member 22, and inner plates 24, 26 connected to the member 22. The spaces between the inner plates 24, 26 and the outer plates 18, 20 are open to the furnace, and a U-shaped tubular member 44 has holes 46 to deliver a sealing gas curtain into the furnace space. An inverted triangular sectioned baffle 56 slides between the inner plates 24, 26 and a sealing gas supplied through a pipe 58, issues between out turned flanges 70 at the bottom of the baffle 56 to complete the gas curtain. The gases from the adjacent sections 12, 14 of the furnace are exhausted from the annular spaces on either side of the barrier through tubes 40, 42 and may be burnt with additional air. The barrier gas may be nitrogen, or other inert gas, and the cylindrical member 22 may be water cooled.
