Reversing.-A compound engine has its high and low pressure pistons connected to a pair of parallel shafts 3, 4 respectively, a pump 6 being driven from the crank-shaft 4 if desired. The crank-shafts are disposed at different levels and are connected together by gear wheels 7, 8, the wheel 7 being mounted freely upon its shaft, to which it is connected by a dog clutch having a sliding portion 9. A projection 10 on the member 9 engages a boss 11 on the wheel 7, the projection engaging one or the other side of the boss in accordance with the direction of running. When reversing, the clutch is released and the engine turned until the lost motion between the wheel boss and the projection is taken up, after which the clutch is re-engaged.
