Abstract
18,931. Roots, J. D. Aug. 17. [Cognate Application, 29,337/09.] Revolving-cylinder and reciprocating-piston type.-Revolving-cylinder fluid-pressure engines in which both the cylinders and crank shaft revolve in opposite directions transmit motion through the intermediate member of an epicyclic train in either direction and at variable velocities, brakes being provided to retard or arrest the crank or cylinder for this purpose. Fig. 1 shows a four-stroke cycle internal-combustion engine with opposite cranks, each crank-pin being driven by two cylinders. The casing I, carrying the intermediate member P of the train M, P, N, transmits the motion, a stationary box T being brought into frictional contact with one or the other of the disks R, S. Band brakes may be substituted for the parts R, S, T. When used on a vehicle, a worm Q on the part I gears with a worm wheel Q<1> on the road-wheel axle. The pistons may drive through eccentrics.
