Abstract

1285059 Gripping apparatus A C BLOWER 27 July 1970 [8 Aug 1969] 39714/69 Heading B4W [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for handling cylindrical objects comprises pivotably connected handles 1 and 2 each of which has an arcuate element, 4 and 5 respectively, between its ends for gripping an object when the handles are pivoted in one sense and for releasing the object when the handles are pivoted in the opposite sense. The handles are U-shaped and the free end of each arm terminates in a T-shaped member 3. These members are connected together by links 7 and (9), Fig. 1 (not shown). Upward movement of the handles causes a clamping movement and the object gripped tends to increase the clamping action. The inside of the elements 4, 5 may have a material with a low coefficient of friction adhered or riveted thereto. Preferably this lining is a thermoplastics material having a C- shape which is heated prior to assembling on to the elements and then cooling the material. The handles may have pivoting brackets 10 for the apparatus to be operated by a crane. Elements 4 and 5 may be pivoted to members 3, and preferably have an angular content of 170 degrees.
