Ballasting. - For the purpose of partly submerging a ship and to render it unsinkable, the lower part of the hull is arranged as a chamber 4 to which water can be admitted through apertures 7 fitted with valves, so that the ship rests on a layer of air. The keel is also fitted with valves 8 to admit water to the holds 9, which are made water-tight to enable the air enclosed to be compressed. By this means, it is stated that, in the event of accident, the ship will remain afloat. In addition, hins are provided to receive the cargo and are constructed to rise and fall on rollers 12, a recess C being provided at their lower surfaces in which air is compressed by the entering water. Hatchways 0 communicate with other compartments and are extended, as shown, below the dech 2.
