Abstract

127,067. Hope, L. C. Feb. 22, 1918. Hulls; frames and framing.-The hulls of flying-boats and hydroaeroplane floats are framed with closelyspaced longitudinal stringers A, widelyspaced transverse circular bent-wood hoops B inside the stringers and passing through a keelson E, closely-spaced circular bent-wood ribs F of small cross-section secured at both ends to the keel D and: disposed outside the stringers, and one or more layers of thin wood planking J, K on the ribs F. The upper half of the section of the boat or float is semicircular, whilst the lower half is substantially semicircular but extends downwards slightly at the keel. Where special strains are likely to occur, as at the points of attachment to the aerial structure, wide transverse straps G of bent wood are used, with the addition, if necessary, of interior fore and aft doubling-plates H. Where hatches C are formed, the bent-wood hoops are spaced or inclined to clear the same. Outside the main structure, a double bottom or water planing- surface may be fitted of suitable form and size.
