Abstract

10,213. Caines, A. C. April 27. Hulls.-The upper part of the structure of the hull is curved outwards so as to present a concave curve 1 on the exterior of the vessel. This curve extends throughout the whole length of the vessel and at the bow and stern. The overhanging portions thus formed are constructed as air or float chambers 4 by the provision of longitudinal bulkheads. The lower part 2 of the hull is formed with a longitudinally-extending bulbous formation, which together with the concave upper portion makes a recess at the water-line. The bottom portion 3 of the hull is flat. The frames and plating are made to follow the exterior form of the vessel. This construction is stated to increase the stability and to turn the waves striking the vessel back upon themselves.
