Abstract

128,713. Martinson, E., Cusick, J. F., Hogg, J., and Craig, S. June 20, 1918. Bulkheads; compartments.-For reducing the risk of sinking consequent upon damage to the hull of the ship, an additional skin composed of planks 14 is bolted to the ship's frames 22 and made water-tight. Similar planking is also bolted to the bulkhead stiffeners 5, forming buoyance spaces 27 at each bulkhead. This construction extends from the double bottom to the spare deck, and at the hatchways is inclined inwardly to meet the coamings, as shown. Drain cocks 34 are fitted and operated from the hold to drain the compartments thus formed into the double bottom.
