Ordnance b r e e c h mechanism. - Relates to screw mechanism of the swinging - carrier type, in which the breech-actuating handlever is pivoted on the carrier to move about an axis parallel to the carrier hinge, and has a pin engaging a slot in t h e breech - screw. According to the invention, the pin is so arranged in relation to the pivot of the hand-lever that the pin passes over the dead-point, (i.e. in front of a transverse plane through the pivot of the hand-lever), to lock the mechanism in closed position. The invention is particularly applicable to small-calibre ordnance in which the breech-screw engages threads on the outside of the barrel. Fig. 2 shows, in plan, the breech-screw A<1> rotatably mounted on a. carrier C hinged at C' to the gun and engaging threads on the outside of the barrel A. The screw is rotated for unlocking by a lever B pivoted at b to the carrier and having a spherical projection b<2> engaging a longitudinal slot a<2> in a rearward extension of the screw. After the unlocking movement, continued motion of the lever brings the projection b<2> into engagement with a stop c<x> on the carrier to swing the carrier and block aside about the hinge C', movement of the block relatively to the carrier being prevented by the engagement of a lug ax on the block beneath a projection a on the fixed part of the carrier hinge.
