Abstract

118,134. Summersby, W. R. July 21, 1917. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Relates to mechanism of the kind that opens by a swinging movement of the gun barrel relatively to the breech block and consists in locking the barrel to the breech block by a member slidable in the block and provided with projections engaging recesses in the barrel. A semi-automatic mechanism is shown in which the gun barrel 20 is pivoted at 15 to a plate 14 which slides on the cradle 11 and carries the breech block 16. Mounted on the cradle 11 on opposite sides of the breech block are a breech-unlocking cam 45 and a pivoted spring-controlled breech-opening cam 41, these cams being inoperative during recoil. During run out, firstly, a lever 35, Fig. 4, engages the cam 45, and pressing against a pin 32 moves a spring-controlled locking- block 28 rearwards to free the barrel, the lever 35 being prevented from returning by a spring catch 37, and, secondly, a roller 44 on the barrel engages the cam 41 and rocks the barrel to the position shown in chain lines in Fig. 1, to open the breech. A spring-operated extractor 46 holds the breech open until a new cartridge is inserted, when the barrel falls by gravity to close the breech and actuate the end 40 of the catch 37 to release the locking-block 28.
