Abstract

1276543 Heatable draw roll EASTMAN KODAK CO 17 June 1969 [17 June 1968] 30638/69 Heading B5B [Also in Division F2] An overhung roller 28 for use in the hot stretching of continuous filament or fibre tows of, for example, polyethylene terephthalate comprises an outer cylindrical shell 32 supported on a thicker coaxial inner cylindrical shell 34 in whose outer surface is formed axial grooves 40 each wider than its adjacent land 36, the grooves enabling a heat transfer medium to pass in contact with the shell 32. The heat transfer medium may be supplied via a supporting shaft 30, circulating either as shown in full or in broken arrows. The shaft 30 may also have an annular passage 82 through which air to cool a shaft bearing is drawn. The medium may be used to heat or cool the roller. The rollers 28 may be used for hot drawing synthetic fibre tows in a process (Fig. 1, not shown) including a first drawing stage (12), a water bath (14), second drawing stage (16), steam tube (18), hot drawing (20) heat setting oven (22) and pulling stage (24).
