Abstract

Stretched, twisted and heat-set filaments of aromatic polyester of high molecular weight e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, are produced by a continuous process of twisting the stretched filaments, passing twisted filaments through a solution, dispersion, or an emulsion of "one or more substances boiling at a temperature of 120-350 DEG C.", feeding the filaments to and several turns around a first and then a second roller, the former being heated e.g. electrically, and the two rollers defining a heating zone and rotating at different circumferential speeds, and winding. The filaments between the rollers are heated on all sides and uniformly to a temperature within the range of 220 DEG -350 DEG C. for 0.1 to 5 seconds with a permitted adjustable shrinkage of 5-35%. The "substance" is preferably removable by washing or is acceptable as a finishing agent or is not detrimental if it remains on the filaments in a small proportion. Specified "substances" are mono- or polyhydric alcohols, mono-or dicarboxylic acids, esters of mono- or dicarboxylic acids or inorganic acids, ethers, hydrocarbons, phenols and amines and amino alcohols, and polymeric materials: examples include glycerol, lauryl alcohol, glycols, polyglycols, and sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, diphenyl, terephthalic acid dibutyl ester, tricresyl phosphate, ethylamines, diethanolamines, triethanolamines, polyacrylic acid and esters thereof, polymethacrylic acid, and polyvinyl alcohols and esters thereof. Optional additives include a dispersion dyestuff, an optical brightening agent or a sizing agent.
