Abstract

In a process for improving the dyeability of filaments or fibre tows made of or containing high molecular weight linear polyesters, which have not been heat-set, the filaments or tows are treated, prior to or after stretching, with a tertiary monoamine which carries at least one aliphatic radical having 6 to 20 carbon atoms and/or an aromatic radical on the nitrogen atom, or an ammonium compound derived therefrom, the filaments or tows are stretched if not already stretched, and dried if the amine or ammonium compound has been applied as a solution or emulsion and are than allowed to shrink by a determined amount at temperatures above 190 DEG C. The amine may have the formula <FORM:1060623/D1-D2/1> where R is an aryl or aralkyl radical or an aliphatic radical having 6-20 carbon atoms, which may also contain an alcoholic hydroxyl group, an ester group or one or several ether group, and R2 and R3 are saturated aliphatic radicals having 1-20 carbon atoms, which may also contain an alcoholic hydroxyl group, an ester group or one or several ether groups, or are aliphatic radicals containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms. R1 may be inter alia an alkylene glycol ether or polyalkylene glycol ether radical, the free hydroxyl groups of which may be etherified with an aliphatic alcohol, or esterified with a fatty acid. R1 may also be a benzalkyl phenyl or diphenyl radical. R2 or R3 may be inter alia an alkanol radical having 1-3 carbon atoms, an alkoxy radical, or a polyalkylene glycol ether radical. Many amines and ammonium compounds derived therefrom are exemplified, e.g. dimethyl aniline, and didodecyl-methylamine. The amine may be applied to the stretched or unstretched filaments in the pure state or in the form of an aqueous or non-aqueous solution or emulsion at room temperature or elevated temperatures up to 90 DEG C., by passing the filaments through a bath, or by spraying, or by use of rollers. The amount of base on the filaments is preferably 0.5-1.5% of the weight of the polyester filaments. Shrinkage may be carried out by passing the filament or tow through a heated zone between conveyers, e.g. rollers rotating to allow shrinkage of e.g. 10-50%. The heating may be effected by hot air, heated liquid, e.g. metal, baths, infra-red radiation or heated plates. The treated filaments are preferably restretched after shrinkage. The treated polyester filaments may be dyed with acid, vat or dispersion dyestuffs, which may be added, if desired, to an aqueous solution or emulsion of amine with which the filaments are treated so that the dyestuff diffuses, together with the amine, into the filament. Examples relate to the impregnation of polyethylene terephthalate filaments.
