Abstract

A 45-70% outer portion of a terephthalic acid polyester filament is modified to improve dyeability by treating the filament with a heated inert organic liquid at a temperature of 80 DEG -150 DEG C. for a period of 1-60 secs., drawing to increase its length 2-6 times, and washing substantially free from liquid, the resulting filament having a tenacity of at least 3 g.p.d. and the glass-rubber transition temperature of the outer portion being 15 DEG -45 DEG C. lower than that of the remaining inner portion. The filament may be of polyethylene or poly hexa hydro-para-xylylene terephthalate or polyethylene terephthalate/sebacate, /adipate, or /isophthalate. The solvent may be polyethylene glycol or a nonyl phenyl polyethylene glycol ether having a molecular weight of up to 6,000. Treatment with liquid may be by immersion, spraying, or applicator rolls. Heating may be effected after application of liquid. The treating liquid may be removed by washing with hot water during stretching. The stretched filament may be dried and then set at 140 DEG C. in a hot air oven.
