Abstract

Filaments, fibres, yarns, fabrics films and like shaped articles made of polyethylene terephthalate are subjected to heat treatment at a temperature of 230 DEG to 255 DEG C. and then dyed. The heat treatment may be effected by contact with a hot metal surface, by means of hot inert liquids or gases, infra-red lamps or by passage between high-frequency electrodes. The polyethylene terephthalate may be oriented by a cold drawing process prior to the heat treatment, and during the latter they may or may not be allowed to relax. Examples are given in which polyethylene terephthalate yarn or fabric is heated by passing it in contact with a heated metal surface and dyed with an acetate type dyestuff or azoic dyestuff. Basic or vat dyestuffs may also be used.
