Thermoplastics articles are given good dyeability with disperse dyes and/or rendered antistatic by treating them with an amide acetal having the formula: in which R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic radical having 1-17 carbon atoms or an aromatic radical, each of R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> is a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic radical having 1-4 carbon atoms or an aromatic radical, or R<SP>2</SP> is an alkoxymethylene or aryloxymethylene group and n is 2 or 3, at 20‹-200‹C, and, then allowing water, a carboxylic acid having:: 1-18 carbon atoms or an anhydride thereof' to act on them. Fibres, yams, knitted and woven fabrics, strips, film and sheeting madefrom polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polymethacrylates, poly (ethylene glycol terephthalate), poly-(1, 4-bis' (hydroxymethyl) cyclohexane terephthalate) or nylon 6, nylon 6, 6, nylon 11 or nylon 12 may be treated. Thearticle may be treated with the amide acetal by immersing it for from some minutes up to one hour in the liquid or dissolved bicyclic amide acetal, suitable solvents being isopropanol and toluene, excess adherent amide acetal being removed, and the article then treated with the water, acid or anhydride thereof at room 'temperature or elevated temperatures, suitable acids and anhydrides being formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, caproic, capryllic, pelargonic, lauric, stearic, oleic, benzoic, phthalic, or trimellitic acid or acetic or phthalic anhydride. If the article is after treated with water following treatment with the amide acetal it may then be dried and if it is after treated with an acid or anhydride ,thereof it may be after treated with water, preferably at boiling temperature, prior to drying. After treatment with "the amide acetal the article may be left without further treatment and allowed to come into contact with water or water vapour in the course of further processing, e.g. dyeing, or upon standing in the air.
