Abstract
Acrylonitrile polymer fibres are treated in the gel state with a solution, preferably aqueous, containing 0.1-5%, on the height of solution, of an alkyl aryl sulphonate of the formula R-Ar-SO2O-X wherein X is a monovalent salt-forming radical, R is an alkyl radical of 4-12 C atoms and Ar is an aromatic hydrocarbon radical of 6-12 C atoms, and thereafter dried to form fibres of improved dyeability. The preferred sulphonates are the isopropylamine or sodium salt of p-dodecryl-benzenesulphonate, sodium 2-butylnaphthalene-6-sulphonate and sodium 2-isopropylnaphthalene-6-sulphonate. The acrylonitrile polymers may contain 2-20% of other copolymerisable mono-olefinic monomers (many specified). Other known agents may also be incorporated in the polymer or applied in the course of the process, e.g. heat and light stabilisers, delusterants, plasticisers, lubricants and anti-static agents. Examples of treating and dyeing with basic dyes are given.
