Abstract

Linear polyesters and polycarbonates are given an improved dye-affinity by incorporating in them an aromatic ether of formula Ar(OCnH2n)x-1OAr1 where Ar and Ar1 are the same or different radicals containing an aromatic nucleus which may be substituted by methoxy groups or halogen atoms, and n and x are 2-4. The polyester may be the autocondensation product of a hydroxy acid, or the condensation product of a dicarboxylic acid and a glycol or a dihydric phenol, the preferred polymers being polyglycol terephthalates. In examples, one of the above ethers is added to (1) and (2) Polyethylene terephthalate; (3) and (4) Polyethylene terephthalate/5-(sodium sulpho) isophthalate; (5) Poly(trans-p-hexahydroxylylene terephthalate); (6) Polyhexamethylene bibenzoate; (7) Poly(p,p1-isopropylidenediphenyl isophthalate); and (8) Poly(p,p1-isopropylidenediphenyl carbonate). The polymers are then dyed (see Group IV(c)). Specification 578,079 is referred to.ALSO:The dye-affinity of polyesters and polycarbonates is improved by adding to the polymers an aromatic ether of the formula Ar(OCnH2n)x-1OAr1 wherein Ar and Ar1 are radicals containing an aromatic nucleus and n and x are 2-4. After dyeing fabrics made from the polymer, the ether may be removed by scouring with a hot solvent (e.g. carbon tetrachloride or benzene/ethanol) or by a heat-setting treatment. In examples, in which the polymers are modified by addition of 10% of one of the above ethers, (1) and (2) modified polyethylene terephthalate or fabric is dyed at 100 DEG C. in a dye-bath containing a blue anthraquinone dyestuff of the formula <FORM:0898289/IV (c)/1> together with a dispersing agent comprising an unsaturated long chain alcohol sulphate, the fabric is then heated to 190 DEG C., (3) and (4) modified polyethylene terephthalate/5-(sodium-sulpho) isophthalate (98/2) yarn is dyed at 100 DEG C. in a dye-bath containing a blue dye of the formula <FORM:0898289/IV (c)/2> together with a retarding agent comprising a long-chain alkyl trimethyl ammonium chloride; (5) modified poly(trans-p-hexahydroxylylyene terephthalate) film is dyed at the boil in a bath containing 1, 4 - diamino - 2, 3 - dichloro - anthraquinone (a violet dye) together with an anionic hydrocarbon sodium sulphonate; (6)-(8) films made of modified polyhexamethylene bibenzoate, poly-p1-isopropylidenediphenyl isophthalate and bis-phenol-A-polycarbonate are dyed as in example (5).
