Abstract

The invention comprises a composition of a high molecular weight linear aromatic polyester plasticised with a bis-aralkyl ether. The term "high molecular weight polyester" is used to denote a polyester having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.4 when measured at 30 DEG C. in a solvent composed of a 60/40 mixture by weight of phenol and tetrachloroethane. The plasticiser can be incorporated while the polymer is in solution or by using an internal mixer or a two-roll mill. An example describes mixing an ethylene terephthalate-ethylene isophthalate with bis-(bimethylbenzyl) ether. The plasticisers can also contain chloro, bromo, nitro, hydroxy, aryl, aryloxy, alkyl and alkoxy groups. Specified are bis-benzyl, bis-(diethylbenzyl), bis-(p-phenylbenzyl), bis-(p-phenoxybenzyl), bis - (chlorobenzyl), bis - (nitrobenzyl), bis - (hydroxybenzyl) and bis - (b - phenylethyl) ethers. The polyesters can be those produced by self-condensation of hydroxy-acids such as p-(b -hydroxyethoxy benzoic acid, p-(hydroxymethyl) benzoic acid and p-(b -hydroxyethyl) benzoic acid. Other examples are polyesters and copolyesters of acids such as terephthalic, isophthalic, 1,4-diphenoxy benzene-41,411-dicarboxylic, 1,4 - bis - (phenoxymethyl) - benzene - 41,411 - dicarboxylic (phenoxymethyl) - benzene-41,411 - dicarboxylic, phenoxybenzene - 41,411-dicarboxylic and diphenoxy alkane dicarboxylic acids with dihydroxy compounds such as glycols or hydroquinone.
