[Also in Division C3] Polyesters of molecular weight 500-10,000 are prepared by reacting together a mixture of (a) 1C-65 mole per cent of #-caprolactone, (b) 45-17¢ mole per cent of an aliphatic diol and (c) 45-17¢ mole per cent of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, so that the overall ratio of C to O atoms in the product, excluding terminal group oxygen atoms, is at least 4À5: 2, and provided that when both (b) and (c) are single compounds at least one of them carries one or more C 1-4 alkyl groups substituent on the main chain C atoms. Components (b) and (c) may be mixtures and (c) may comprise up to 10 mole per cent of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid; preferably the molar proportion of (b) exceeds that of (c). Suitable components are ethylene, propylene, butylene-1: 2-, -1: 3-, -2: 3- and -1:4-, pentamethylene, neopentyl, hexamethylene, decamethylene, diethylene and dipropylene glycols; succinic, glutaric, adipic, azelaic, sebacic, 3-methyladipic, 2: 4-diethyladipic and 2-ethylsuberic acids; phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic and benzoic acids. Components (b) and (c) may contain 5-50 mole per cent of a monohydric alcohol or monocarboxylic acid respectively-these being excluded from the calculation of the C: O ratio. In examples #-caprolactone, adipic acid and 1: 2-propylene glycol or 1: 3-butylene glycol are heated with tetrabutyl titanate ((a): (c) being 2: 3 or 3: 2 and (b) being in approx. 20% excess). Any free hydroxy groups may be esterified with e.g. acetic acid. The polyesters are used as plasticizers.
